Why Become a PTA Member?

  1. Statistics show that children whose parents are involved in their education achieve greater academic success than their counterparts whose parents are not involved.
  2. As a PTA member, your vote counts! All monies raised through PTA-sponsored events are allocated according to a vote of the majority of the membership. This is your organization and we want to hear your voice!
  3. As a member of the Richmond PTA, you will become a member of the oldest child advocacy group in the United States.
  4. Get involved in what is happening in Salem concerning our legislative issues affecting children.
  5. It is fun!!! Our Richmond PTA believes that creating a climate of fun and family-centered activities is good for the overall health of our school. Join us for our many fun events!!!

Join PTA -- We Need You!

As your PTA Secretary and Membership Chair I would like to personally thank all of the 98 people who have joined Richmond PTA as members for the 2009-2010 school year. PTA membership lasts for one school year so if you have not yet had a chance, please consider renewing your membership for this school year. PTA is only as strong as its members. The more members we have in PTA, the stronger a voice we have for children at the state and national level in legislation that directly affects children and schools.

We are well on our way to this year's membership goal of 170 Richmond PTA members. This is a 10% increase over last year's membership of 155.

PTA membership also allows you to vote at PTA meetings and to receive the e-mail newsletter from Oregon PTA which includes news about legislation, issues which affect kids and teachers, parenting tips, and PTA projects. It is a great way to become more involved in your child's education.

***Extra PTA membership forms are located on the table in front of the Richmond school office. I will also bring them to the movie night, our first PTA general membership meeting.

Thanks so much for all your dedication and support of our wonderful Japanese Immersion Elementary School,
Carol Shaw

Room representatives needed

Carol Shaw, PTA Secretary, is coordinating the Classroom Representative training this year. She is looking for some dedicated parents to volunteer some time this year to act as helpers to their teachers. This volunteer work is FUN and a guarantee to help you get to know your child's teachers better as well as other parents and families of the children in your child's classes. It is a great way to become more involved in your child's educational experience.

It is recommended that each classroom has 2-3 representatives (consider asking a friend to do it with you):

  1. To assist the teachers as needed.
  2. To plan parties and other classroom events
  3. To contact classroom parents for volunteers
  4. To be the bridge between the teachers and parents.

PLEASE CONTACT Carol Shaw if you are interested. Training will be on the morning of September 28th after drop off. More details to follow.

Library news: Japanese Library Committee

The Richmond Library formed a committee dedicated to expanding the Japanese library book collection. If you love books, have ideas on how to acquire books, or have a good knowledge of Japanese children's literature, we need you on this committee. Set time and day of meetings to be determined. Please contact Sara Tam at 503-335-3135 if you are interested.
